Hawaiian Islands
The Hawaiian Islands were unknown to western explorers until Captain James Cook arrived in the latter half of the 18th century. Cook made several voyages to Hawaii, and was killed on the island of Hawaii during his third voyage in 1779. The Hawaiian Islands were called the Sandwich Islands by the British.
